Why does my gas fireplace pilot light keep going out?

In Brevard, a pilot that lights then quits often comes down to moisture as much as age. Transylvania County sees 80-plus inches of rain a year, and damp crawl spaces and chimney chases corrode thermocouple connections and rust pilot components — so alongside the usual worn sensor, we look hard at corrosion. It's licensed, usually inexpensive work.

Rain is the local variable

Most pilot dropouts trace back to a thermocouple that's stopped making enough voltage to hold the gas valve open. In Brevard, that story has a wet chapter. With a wet season running March through June and rainfall that cracks crowns and spalls brick, the moisture works its way into chimney chases and crawl spaces — and a corroded thermocouple connection or a rust-pitted sensor produces the same failure as an old one. The flame proves for a second, then the valve drops it and shuts the gas.

Cabins, downtown homes, and fuel

Brevard runs the range from downtown homes to cabins tucked toward Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest, and a good share of them are on propane rather than a gas main. Propane burns hotter and needs its own orifice and pressure, so an LP pilot set a hair lean throws a thin flame that can't keep the sensor hot. Between moisture, fuel, and age, the diagnosis here is rarely one-size-fits-all — which is why we meter and inspect rather than reflexively swap parts.

What we check

Our tech reads the thermocouple with a meter, cleans the pilot, inspects every connection for corrosion, checks the flue for a moisture-driven draft, and verifies propane pressure where it applies. It's usually a small part or a cleaning, quoted before we touch anything. Because all of it is gas-valve work, it's licensed — not a DIY fix — and we pull the Transylvania County permit and meet the inspector on any gas-line work. Call (828) 545-0525.
