Why does my pilot light blow out on windy days?
Wind is pushing a downdraft down your vent or chimney and physically snuffing the pilot — most often when the pilot flame is already weak or the vent cap is poorly positioned. WNC's ridges, valleys, and tall trees make downdrafts worse than in flat country. A strong, clean pilot and the right termination usually cure it for good.
Why the mountains make it worse
Draft is trickier at elevation, and our terrain is the reason. Wind coming over a ridge or funneling up a valley can reverse the airflow in a vent and shove cold air back down onto the pilot — the same downdraft that makes chimneys howl on gusty nights. A pilot that would shrug off an indoor breeze gets snuffed when that column of air hits it. Sealed direct-vent units are far less exposed, but a marginal pilot on any system is vulnerable to weather.
A weak pilot is half the problem
A robust pilot resists wind; a starved one doesn't. If yours only blows out when it's gusty, the flame is often already borderline — a partially clogged orifice from off-season spiders and dust, low gas pressure, or a flame that doesn't sit deep in its shield. Fix the pilot's health and the same wind stops mattering. That's why we don't just relight it; we find out why it was weak enough to lose in the first place.
The venting side
The other half is the termination: a missing or wrong-style vent cap, an obstruction, or a cap positioned where wind loads it. On wood and B-vent systems a proper cap or draft-correcting termination solves chronic downdraft; on direct-vent, the sealed coaxial pipe should shrug off weather, so repeated outages there point to the cap or a compromised seal.
