Why does my pilot light blow out on windy days?
In Black Mountain, the Swannanoa Valley's shape is usually behind a wind-blown pilot — cold air pools and inverts here, and gusts funnel through the gaps and off Montreat's wooded ridges straight into chimney tops. That downdraft shoves cold air back onto the burner and drops a pilot that's already weak. A robust flame and a wind-correcting cap settle it.
A valley that concentrates the wind
Black Mountain sits where cold air drains and pools, and the same valley geometry that makes your mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville's also channels wind. Gusts coming over the ridge or funneling down through Montreat and Ridgecrest hit chimney terminations hard, reversing the draft in the flue. Heavily wooded, shaded lots keep those chimneys cool and their flues full of cool, dense air, which only makes the downward push easier. A pilot burning at the bottom of that is the part that goes out.
Wind reveals a flame that was already soft
Here's the pattern we see: the pilot only fails when it's gusty, so people blame the weather — but the flame was usually marginal already. A pilot orifice partly plugged by off-season debris, low pressure, or a flame not reaching deep into its shield burns just well enough on calm nights and loses on windy ones. We restore the pilot to a strong, enveloping blue flame, and suddenly the same gusts don't matter. That's the difference between relighting it and actually fixing it.
