Why does my pilot light blow out on windy days?
In Asheville, a pilot that dies on windy nights is usually a downdraft magnified by our topography and your chimney's age — a gust rolling off the North Asheville ridges reverses the airflow in an older masonry flue and snuffs a pilot that was already burning weak. Old flues catch the wind first
Montford, North Asheville, and Grove Park are full of original masonry fireplaces sitting under tall, uninsulated flues — exactly the setup that lets a cold column of ridge air stack up and spill back down onto the burner. West Asheville's older bungalows behave the same way. When wind loads a flue like that, even a decent pilot can lose its footing, and a marginal one doesn't stand a chance. Newer South Asheville construction with sealed direct-vent units is far more forgiving, which tells you the real fix is often about how the fire is vented, not the fireplace itself.
The flame does most of the failing
Wind is the trigger, but a healthy pilot keeps the trigger from mattering. If yours only quits when it gusts, the flame was probably borderline to begin with — a pilot orifice half-choked by a summer's worth of webbing and dust, or a flame sitting shallow in its shield instead of wrapping the sensor. Relighting it just resets the clock. We'd rather find out why the pilot got weak enough to lose, then confirm the vent cap is the right style and correctly positioned so the next front doesn't put it out again.
