Why does my pilot light blow out on windy days?

In Swannanoa, we look first at whether the venting came through the storm intact — recovery here has meant a lot of rebuilds and new installs, and a shifted cap or a damaged flue lets a windy-day downdraft snuff the pilot. Add the valley's fog and cold-air pooling on old Grovemont masonry, and the answer is usually the termination plus a weak flame.

Since the storm, check the whole path

Swannanoa has been rebuilding, and a lot of homes here have new fireplaces and stoves going into renovated rooms while others are running chimneys that rode out a rough stretch. Either way, a pilot that now blows out on windy days is worth a full look rather than another relight — a cap that shifted, a flue that took damage, or a fresh install whose termination isn't quite right will all let wind reverse the draft. We inspect the venting end to end before deciding the wind is the whole story.

A damp valley and old fireboxes

The Grovemont area's 1940s-to-60s homes came with original masonry fireboxes, and the Swannanoa valley works against them — fog, cold-air pooling, and damp air rust dampers and keep those flues cool and downdraft-prone. A cool, dense column in an old masonry flue reverses easily when a gust hits the top, dropping cold air onto the burner. On these systems the fix usually lives in a strong pilot plus the right cap; a sealed direct-vent unit or insert takes the weather out almost entirely.

Close, licensed, and permitted

We're only about 15 minutes east, and Swannanoa is a community we're in often. After tuning the pilot and checking pressure, we correct the termination and permit any venting or gas work with Buncombe County — pressure-tested and inspected, which matters double on anything touched during a rebuild. Most fixes are an inexpensive cleaning or a new cap, quoted up front. Call (828) 545-0525.
