Why does my pilot light blow out on windy days?
In Waynesville, wind kills pilots more often than in lower WNC because you're at nearly 2,650 feet with a longer, colder heating season — a cold flue full of dense air already fights the fire, and a gust over the ridge tips that column back down the chimney. Drafty older Hazelwood fireboxes make it worse; a strong pilot and the right cap fix it.
Cold air, thin draft, and a shove from the wind
At Waynesville's elevation the outside air is colder and heavier, so the warm column that's supposed to rise in your flue is weaker to begin with — draft is genuinely harder up here. Add a gust rolling off the surrounding ridges and that sluggish column can reverse, sending cold air down onto the pilot like a plug dropping into the chimney. It's the same physics that makes an old Hazelwood chimney moan on a windy night, and a borderline pilot is the first casualty.
Open fireboxes feel it most
Much of Waynesville's older housing runs open, drafty masonry fireplaces that lean hard on the flue for draft — exactly the systems a downdraft overwhelms. If you're tired of relighting, a sealed direct-vent unit or a gas insert with a proper liner takes the weather out of the equation almost entirely. Before we get there, though, we make sure the pilot itself is robust: a flame half-starved by a summer of spider webbing and dust will drop in a breeze a clean, deep-seated flame would never feel.
What we do about it
We're about 35 minutes west, and Waynesville is a town we're in constantly. We'll clean and tune the pilot, verify pressure, and correct the termination — a draft-correcting or wind-resistant cap solves most chronic downdraft on wood and B-vent systems. Any venting or gas work gets permitted with Haywood County and pressure-tested. With your season running weeks longer than Asheville's, it's worth doing before you're leaning on the fireplace nightly. Call (828) 545-0525.
