What is a thermocouple and how do I know if mine is failing?

A thermocouple is the safety sensor that proves your pilot is lit — a metal probe sitting in the pilot flame that generates a tiny voltage to hold the gas valve open. When it fails, the valve won't stay open, so the telltale sign is a pilot that lights but dies the moment you release the control knob. It's an inexpensive, common repair.

What it does

Think of the thermocouple as a flame detector wired to a fail-safe. Its tip sits directly in the pilot flame; the heat generates roughly 25 to 30 millivolts of current, and that current energizes a small electromagnet inside the gas valve that keeps pilot gas flowing. No flame, no current, valve closes — that's the safety that stops gas from pouring into your living room if the pilot ever goes out. Every standing-pilot fireplace has one.

Signs yours is failing

The signature symptom is a pilot that won't stay lit after you let go of the knob — you hold it, it burns fine, you release, it dies. As they age, thermocouples put out less voltage until they cross below the valve's threshold. Other tells: needing to hold the knob longer and longer each season, or intermittent pilot outages. Before condemning it we rule out the cheaper causes — a sooted tip, a loose connection at the valve, or a weak pilot flame from a clogged orifice that isn't heating the tip properly.

Testing and replacing — our lane

We confirm a bad thermocouple by measuring its millivolt output rather than guessing, both open and under load. Replacing one is quick and the part is cheap, but it threads into the sealed gas control, so it's licensed gas work — not a DIY fix, and not something to improvise. Most of these we finish in a single visit with a part off the truck, quoted upfront. Call (828) 545-0525.
