What is a thermopile and how do I test it with a multimeter?
A thermopile is a heavy-duty thermocouple — a stack of junctions in the pilot flame that generates enough voltage (300 to 750 millivolts) to power your fireplace's on/off valve and switch, no household electricity required. You test it by reading millivolts across the valve terminals: healthy is roughly 300 to 750mV open, holding above about 325mV under load. Below that, it's failing.
Thermopile versus thermocouple
Both live in the pilot flame and both make voltage from heat, but they do different jobs. A thermocouple (around 25 to 30mV) only holds the pilot safety valve open. A thermopile is bigger and generates 300 to 750 millivolts — enough to actually operate the main gas valve when you flip a wall switch or remote. That's how millivolt fireplaces run heat during a power outage, and it's a big part of why we point outage-minded folks toward standing-pilot systems after Helene.
Reading it with a meter
Set a multimeter to DC millivolts and read across the thermopile's two terminals at the valve (often marked TP and TH-TP). Two numbers matter: the open-circuit reading with the pilot lit and everything off, and the reading under load with the burner calling. A strong pile reads several hundred millivolts open and stays above roughly 325mV under load. If it reads healthy cold but collapses when the burner is energized, it's tired — and that's the reason your fireplace drops out.
Where the DIY line is
Touching a meter to the terminals is measurement, and knowing the numbers helps you understand the diagnosis. But the thermopile sits in the sealed gas control alongside the pilot and valve, and pulling, aiming, or replacing it — plus verifying gas pressure and the valve's condition — is licensed gas work, which is our lane and no one else's here.
