Why won't my gas fireplace light after a power outage?
It depends on your ignition type. A standing-pilot fireplace keeps a flame burning and shouldn't care about an outage — if it won't light, the outage probably isn't the cause. An electronic-ignition unit needs power or backup batteries to spark the pilot; after an outage those batteries may be drained, or the ignition module needs a reset.
Know which system you have
Standing-pilot units burn a small flame around the clock, independent of the grid — that's why a millivolt gas fireplace is genuine backup heat when the power's out. If yours is standing-pilot and dead after an outage, the outage is likely a coincidence and the real fault is a pilot or thermocouple issue.
Electronic (intermittent) ignition lights the pilot only on demand. Many run off a AA battery pack precisely so they still work during an outage — but if those batteries are old, the storm that cut your power is also what exposed them.
Reset and recheck the batteries
On electronic units, start by replacing the batteries in both the receiver and the remote, then let the ignition module reset — some need power cycled or a few minutes to clear a lockout after repeated failed spark attempts. If it locked out during the outage, a proper reset often brings it right back.
If new batteries and a reset don't do it, the module or wiring may have taken a hit. That's a diagnostic visit, and it's our work — we'll quote it upfront.
