Why does my gas fireplace still not work after I replaced the thermocouple?

Usually because the thermocouple wasn't the actual problem — or you swapped the wrong part. Many electronic-ignition and millivolt fireplaces use a thermopile, not a thermocouple, and the two aren't interchangeable. Even the right part fails if it isn't seated in the pilot flame correctly, the connection's loose, or the real fault is elsewhere: the switch, wiring, or valve.

Thermocouple vs. thermopile — the mix-up we see most

A thermocouple is a single-sensor safety device — it proves the pilot is lit and holds the pilot valve open, generating roughly 25 to 30 millivolts. A thermopile is a stack of thermocouples that generates far more — commonly 500 to 750 millivolts, many times a thermocouple's output and enough to actually open the main gas valve on a millivolt system.

If your main burner won't fire, the part you needed was almost certainly the thermopile. If your pilot won't stay lit, the thermocouple's the right target. Swap the wrong one and nothing changes — the fireplace stays exactly as dead as it was, and now you've spent money and time on the wrong sensor.

Right part, wrong install

Even the correct sensor won't work if the tip isn't sitting in the hottest part of the pilot flame — it needs to be enveloped by the flame, not just near it. A loose connection at the valve terminal, an over-tightened nut that cracks the fitting, or corrosion on the spade connector all kill the signal.

We also see brand-new parts that were simply defective out of the box, and pilot flames too weak to heat any sensor — the classic Western North Carolina off-season problem where spiders and dust clog the pilot orifice. Fix the weak pilot and the sensor you already replaced may work fine.

When it's not the sensor at all

If a fresh, correctly installed thermopile still won't fire the burner, the fault is downstream: a failed wall switch, broken or corroded wiring, a bad valve, or on electronic-ignition units, a dead ignition module. This is exactly why we test with a multimeter before replacing anything — reading the millivolts tells us whether the sensor, the switch, or the valve is the weak link.
