Why does my gas fireplace pilot light keep going out?

In Candler, the pilot fix depends on your fuel. Natural gas has reached the newer Enka-Candler subdivisions, but plenty of rural Hominy Valley and Pisgah Highway properties still run propane — and LP pressure and orifice sizing add a variable that gas-main homes don't have. On either fuel, a worn thermocouple is common, and it's licensed, usually inexpensive work.

Two fuels in one town

Candler is one of Asheville's fastest-growing suburbs, and its fuel map reflects that. Natural-gas mains have followed the new subdivisions into Enka-Candler, where fireplaces enjoy steady pressure — but out in the rural Hominy Valley and up the Pisgah Highway, propane is still the norm. That matters for a pilot: propane burns hotter and needs its own orifice and regulator pressure, so an LP flame set lean runs thin and can't keep the thermocouple hot. Knowing which fuel you're on is step one of the diagnosis.

Builder-grade boxes and the off-season clog

Many of Candler's new subdivisions came with basic decorative builder-grade fireboxes, and owners often want a real heat-producing upgrade within a few years. In the meantime, those units drop pilots for the ordinary reasons — a thermocouple aging out, or an orifice clogged by a summer of dust and webbing so the flame starves. Hominy Valley's natural bowl, which can trap air, is also why we like clean-burning sealed appliances here when it's time to upgrade.

The licensed diagnosis

Our tech confirms your fuel first, meters the thermocouple, cleans and tunes the pilot, and checks propane pressure and orifice sizing on the rural LP homes. It's all licensed gas work in North Carolina, not a DIY relight, and we pull the Buncombe County permit on any gas-line involvement. We're about 15 minutes west, so most repairs are a single visit, quoted before we start. Call (828) 545-0525.
