Why does my gas fireplace pilot light keep going out?
In Sylva, two things drive pilot dropouts. Student and rental housing near Western Carolina gets heavy use with inconsistent upkeep, so pilots go unserviced until they quit; and Tuckasegee valley moisture rusts dampers and degrades components fast. The usual worn thermocouple applies too — and all of it is licensed, usually inexpensive work.
Rentals that never get serviced
A lot of Sylva's housing near the university is student and rental stock — used hard, and maintained on a schedule that's easy to let slip. A gas pilot that never gets its annual cleaning eventually starves: the orifice clogs with off-season dust and webbing, the flame thins, and the thermocouple can't stay hot enough to hold the valve open. By the time anyone calls, the pilot's been dropping out for a while, often just as a cold snap arrives. It's usually a simple cleaning or an inexpensive part, but it does need attention.
River-valley moisture speeds the decay
Sylva and Dillsboro sit in the Tuckasegee valley, where cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster than in drier towns. That same damp air corrodes thermocouple connections and pits the sensor, which produces the same lights-then-dies failure as ordinary age. The older masonry chimneys around historic Dillsboro are especially prone to it, and mixed-fuel Sylva means some homes are on propane, where pressure and orifice sizing join the checklist.
The fix, and the licensing
Our tech meters the thermocouple, cleans and tunes the pilot, inspects the connections for corrosion, and replaces what's tired. Because every piece of it lives on the gas valve, it's licensed work in North Carolina, not a DIY relight — we handle the permit and meet the inspector on any gas-line repair. We're about 50 minutes west, so a preventive visit beats waiting on parts mid-winter. Call (828) 545-0525.
