Those conversions commonly run older standing-pilot valves — a small flame kept alive year-round — and an oversized 1800s flue pulls a cold-air draft that can snuff a marginal pilot. If the little flame is out, the fireplace has nothing to light from; if it lights and won't stay proved, that's typically the thermocouple aging out.
Sealed inserts fix the draftiness
Part of why these old open hearths struggle is that they pull cold air into the room and fight their own draft. A properly sized sealed insert solves the draftiness while preserving the home's character — and it moves you from a temperamental standing pilot toward more reliable ignition. It's worth raising when we're already out for a no-heat call on an original firebox.
