The heavily wooded slopes around Montreat and Ridgecrest keep houses shaded, cool, and damp — and they also mean seasoned hardwood is rarely more than a short drive away. When wood is this local, hauling a load up from another county or across a state line is all downside: you gain nothing and risk carrying in larvae or spores that hatch into a fresh infestation on a ridge that's currently healthy.
Cold hollows, longer burns, closer sourcing
Swannanoa Valley inversions can leave Black Mountain mornings ten to fifteen degrees colder than Asheville, so hearths here work hard through a long season. Buy your wood in Buncombe, ideally within about fifty miles, and it'll have come off ground where the same pests already live — nothing new introduced.
The lone exception is certified kiln-dried, heat-treated firewood, which is safe to move because the drying kills whatever's in the bark; it's the pick if you're taking wood to a campground.
