Is it OK to run my gas fireplace during a party with a house full of people?
Yes. A direct-vent or vented gas fireplace is sealed or flued to the outdoors, so it doesn't consume the room's air or release combustion byproducts inside — it's safe to run with a crowd. The two things to manage are the hot glass front around guests and kids, and the room getting warm fast with a lot of bodies in it.
Why a full room is no problem for direct-vent
A direct-vent unit pulls combustion air from outside and exhausts back out the same sealed pipe, completely separate from your room air — so a packed room doesn't change a thing about how safely it burns. A vented, B-vent or masonry-flued unit sends its byproducts up the chimney. Either way, the fireplace isn't competing with your guests for oxygen. Run it and enjoy the centerpiece it makes for the gathering.
Mind the glass and the heat
The glass front of a running gas fireplace gets hot enough to cause a serious burn on contact, and at a party — kids weaving around, adults standing close with drinks — that's the real risk, not the combustion. If your unit has its mesh safety screen or barrier, keep it in place; it's there for exactly this. And remember a room full of people generates a lot of heat on its own, so you may want to turn the flame down to keep from cooking everyone out — on a gas unit, a lower flame simply means less heat.
The one to watch: ventless
If yours is a ventless (vent-free) gas log set, a crowded room changes the math. Ventless burns room air, adds humidity, and has an oxygen-depletion sensor that shuts it off if levels drop — fine in normal use, but a packed, closed-up room is when you'd want it turned down or off, with a window cracked.
