Black Mountain, North Carolina

Is it safe to burn wood or add gas logs in an old coal-burning fireplace?

In Black Mountain, an old coal firebox — shallow, narrow, on a flue built for coal's draft — is a poor host for a wood fire, which tends to smoke back into the room in the cold Swannanoa Valley air. On the natural-gas main here, a vented log set sized after a Level 2 inspection is usually the safer, cleaner path.

Valley cold and shade, damp chimneys

The Swannanoa Valley inversion drops Black Mountain mornings 10 to 15 degrees below Asheville, and Montreat's heavily wooded lots keep houses shaded and moisture-prone all year. That damp is hard on masonry: it teams up with the corrosive residue inside an unlined coal flue to break down mortar joints. So before we talk fuel in these downtown and Montreat homes, we camera the flue — a Level 2 inspection — because the chimney condition, not the fuel, is usually the real question, and a shallow coal box was never meant to carry a wood fire anyway.

Gas logs on the Buncombe main

Black Mountain sits on natural gas, which makes a vented Real Fyre set the straightforward answer — realistic flame, no embers, no wood smoke straining a marginal flue, once a stainless liner brings the chimney up to standard. Connecting that line is licensed work in North Carolina; a showroom or mason legally can't. We permit it with Buncombe County, pressure-test it, and meet the inspector. We're 15 minutes east of the Emma Road showroom, so the inspection and the gas work happen without a long wait.

If your heart's set on wood

Some boxes can be relined and rebuilt for a small wood fire or an EPA insert, but coal fireboxes are often too shallow to pass. We measure honestly at a free assessment and tell you before anything's torn out. Call (828) 545-0525.
