Is it safe to install a wood stove in a mobile home?

Yes — out in Mars Hill's rural valleys, where homes run on propane or wood, a manufactured-home wood stove fits, done right: listed for mobile homes, outside combustion air ducted to the firebox, anchored to the floor, on a listed hearth pad with verified clearances, and vented by a listed chimney. We pull the Madison County permit and meet the inspector on every install.

Rural valleys run on wood and propane

Around Mars Hill, the college pulls one way and the countryside another. University-area rentals tend to want easy, flip-a-switch heat, while rural homes up Spring Creek, Gabriels Creek, and Forks of Ivy lean on propane or wood — and for a manufactured home out there, wood is genuine, grid-independent heat off your own woodpile. That grid independence proved its worth across the region after Helene's long outages. At 2,350 feet it's one of the colder spots we serve, so the stove has to truly heat: an EPA-certified unit sized to the square footage, not an oversized box that smolders and glazes the flue with creosote in a tight home.

The one rule that can't bend

A manufactured home is airtight and lightly framed, which is why the stove's data tag has to say it's approved for mobile/manufactured-home use, combustion air must be ducted from outdoors, and the stove has to be bolted to the floor rather than set on it. Skip the outside-air duct and a sealed home can depressurize and pull smoke and carbon monoxide back down the flue. We pull the Madison County permit and meet the inspector, and we'll confirm your floor plan can hold compliant clearances before quoting. If a rental or a busy household wants less work, a direct-vent propane stove is the sealed alternative — the gas connection is licensed work, our lane.
