Is it worth switching from a wood-burning fireplace to an electric fireplace?

In Candler, electric is worth it only if you want a clean, decorative flame and nothing more. Many homes out here run on propane, and even the newer subdivisions' builder-grade fireboxes were built for looks, not heat — so owners keep asking for real upgrades. Electric's roughly 5,000 BTU can't heat and dies in an outage; a sealed insert does the job.

Fuel first: much of Candler is propane

Out in Candler and the rural stretches toward Hominy Valley and Pisgah Highway, plenty of homes heat on propane rather than a gas main, though natural gas does reach some of the newer Enka-Candler subdivisions. Where you already have an LP tank, converting a wood firebox to a sealed propane insert keeps real heat in the picture. Electric brings a clean flame but no meaningful warmth and nothing when the power's out.

Decorative boxes and valley air

Candler's fast-growing subdivisions came with basic decorative fireboxes, and owners tend to want genuine heat-producing upgrades within a few years. The Hominy Valley bowl also traps air, which is why clean-burning sealed appliances appeal here — a sealed gas insert burns cleanly and vents outside, unlike an open wood fire's smoke. Electric burns nothing, which is clean, but it also heats nothing beyond about 5,000 BTU.

The upgrade we recommend

For most Candler homes, a sealed gas or propane insert running 70% efficient or better solves the 'decorative box, no heat' problem and keeps working through outages on millivolt or battery-backup ignition.
