Electric insert vs gas insert — which is better for an existing fireplace?
If you want that fireplace to genuinely heat the room, gas — a sealed gas insert commonly runs 70 percent efficient or better, and a millivolt unit keeps working with the power out. If you want the look with minimal construction and cost, electric — today's flame effects are convincing, but you get about 5,000 BTU of supplemental warmth, and only while the grid is up.
The heat gap, in plain numbers
The gas inserts we carry — the Napoleon Oakville X4 at 20,000 BTU and the Kozy Heat Chaska 25L at 25,000 BTU with the blower standard — are sealed heaters designed to carry a living space through a mountain winter evening. An electric insert delivers roughly 5,000 BTU, about 1,500 watts, rated for up to around 400 square feet of supplemental warmth. That's real coziness in a bedroom or den; it is not a heating plan for a great room in January. Neither unit is lying to you — they're just built for different jobs.
Two very different installation days
The gas insert is the bigger project: liners down the chimney, a fuel line to the firebox, a county permit, and an inspector — licensed gas work, which in North Carolina is precisely our trade. The electric insert slides into the opening, the flue gets blocked off to stop drafts, and it plugs in or gets hardwired. Simpler day, smaller invoice — an electric unit can be a few hundred dollars, while the gas path is a genuine investment that pays back in heat.
Where each one wins
