Electric insert vs gas insert — which is better for an existing fireplace?

In historic Flat Rock, the choice turns on your 1800s chimney. A sealed insert — gas or electric — cures the cold draft those oversized open hearths pour into the room. Gas also gives back 70-percent-plus heat through a new liner; electric simply blocks the failing clay flue and warms a small space. For the main room, gas usually wins.

Old open hearths and failing clay liners

Flat Rock's homes go back to the 1800s, and their oversized masonry fireplaces were built for open wood fires — which means they are also chimneys full of aging clay flue liners that crack, gap, and let cold air pour down into the room. An insert is the fix either way. A gas insert gets a new stainless liner sized and run down that old flue, then heats at 70 percent efficient or better, turning a drafty showpiece into a working heater while keeping the mantel and surround you love. An electric insert takes the other path: we seal the compromised flue off completely and set the unit in, so the failing clay liner stops mattering.

Character, heat, and the Henderson permit

The appeal in Flat Rock is preserving a historic room while ending its worst habit — bleeding heat and pulling drafts. Gas does the most for that: real output, flame at a switch, and with a natural-gas main available, a clean fuel tie-in. It is licensed work, so we pull the Henderson County permit and meet the inspector on the gas and liner. Electric asks far less — a plug and a blocked flue — and its roughly 5,000 BTU suits a study or bedroom where ambiance leads. If the goal is genuinely heating a large historic parlor, though, the sealed gas insert is the stronger tool. We are 30 minutes south; call (828) 545-0525 for a free assessment.
