Electric insert vs gas insert — which is better for an existing fireplace?
For most Asheville homes, gas wins — a sealed gas insert turns an original Montford or North Asheville masonry opening into a room heater that runs 70 percent efficient or better and keeps going when the grid drops. Electric earns its place in a smaller South Asheville bedroom or den where you want the flame more than the furnace.
Two Asheville housing stories
The city splits neatly. In Montford, North Asheville, and the older streets off Biltmore Village, you have real masonry fireboxes built to burn wood — a sealed gas insert drops in, gets a stainless liner up the flue, and finally makes that opening pay rent as a heater. Newer South Asheville construction leans clean-face gas and modern designs from the start. An electric unit — the Dimplex IgniteXL we carry, with its flame-only summer mode — fits either, but it delivers around 5,000 BTU, roughly 1,500 watts for up to 400 square feet.
