Is the original masonry chimney in my older Asheville home safe to reuse for gas logs or an insert, or does it need a new liner first?
In Sylva two things push the answer toward a liner: hard-used rental fireplaces and river-valley moisture. Vented logs can reuse a masonry flue only if it scans sound and correctly sized, and a sealed insert needs a stainless liner regardless. Near the Tuckasegee, damp air rusts dampers and degrades flue liners fast, so older chimneys here often show more wear than their years suggest.
River Moisture Degrades Flues Fast
Sylva sits in the Tuckasegee valley, where cold air drains down at night and river moisture hangs in the air. That constant damp is rough on a chimney — dampers rust, mortar softens, and clay flue liners break down noticeably faster than they would in a drier spot. A masonry chimney that would still pass in a high-and-dry location can be well past reuse here, and none of it is visible without a camera run up the flue. So before reusing the masonry for gas logs, or sizing a liner for an insert, we look inside.
