Lava rock or fire glass in a gas fire pit — which looks better?
Both look good — it's a style call, not a quality one. Lava rock gives a natural, rugged look that suits stone patios and rustic settings, and it hides ash and dirt well. Fire glass is tumbled tempered glass that catches and reflects the flame, reading clean and modern. Glass shows debris more; lava rock forgives it.
Lava rock: natural and forgiving
Lava rock is the traditional media — porous, matte, earthy, in blacks, reds, and browns. It disappears into a stone or flagstone patio and looks right at a rustic cabin or a fieldstone fire pit. Practically, it's the low-maintenance choice: it hides the ash, pollen, and pine debris that blow around a WNC backyard, and it spreads heat evenly across the burner. If you want the fire to be the star and the media to fade back, lava rock does exactly that.
Fire glass: sparkle and modern edge
Fire glass is tempered glass tumbled into pebbles that reflect and refract the flame, so the whole bed seems to glow. It comes in a wide range of colors — from clear and bronze to cobalt, copper, and black — which lets you tie it to your palette. It reads contemporary and pairs beautifully with a linear or square pit and modern furniture. The trade-off is honesty: glass shows every leaf and speck, so it wants a cover and a little more upkeep.
One rule that isn't optional
Whatever you choose, it has to be rated for fire. Never let anyone drop ordinary landscaping rock or craft-store glass into a gas pit — porous stone can trap moisture and pop, and untempered glass can shatter under heat.
