My chimney is damaged — can I still install a gas insert?
Often yes — though in Sylva, damaged flues are almost expected. The Tuckasegee valley's cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade clay liners fast, and student rentals around Cullowhee rarely get maintained. A sealed gas insert vents through its own stainless liner, so a shot flue is no obstacle — only a failing chimney structure is.
River-valley moisture wears flues out fast
Sylva sits where cold air drains down the Tuckasegee valley and river moisture hangs in the air, and that combination is hard on chimneys — dampers rust, clay liners crack and spall, and flues degrade faster than in drier towns. On top of that, a lot of the housing near Western Carolina is rented and inconsistently maintained, and the historic homes over in Dillsboro carry old masonry chimneys that have never been relined. A gas insert cuts through all of it: a stainless liner replaces the failed flue, and the sealed appliance vents entirely through that new steel.
The line we won't cross
A corroded damper and a cracked liner are routine — the insert and its liner handle them. What we won't do is vent through a chimney that's failing structurally. If moisture has separated the masonry or a broken crown has soaked the stack, that gets repaired first, because a liner rides inside a chimney rather than holding it together. A Level 2 camera inspection makes the call, and we quote any masonry work and the insert plainly and separately.
Fuel, permit, and the distance
Sylva is mixed-fuel, so we set the insert up correctly for natural gas or propane — the wrong fuel setup soots and underperforms. Running or converting that gas is licensed work we pressure-test, the connection a showroom or mason legally can't make, and we permit the job with Jackson County and meet the inspector.
