The one rule: it has to be the correct rated glass for your unit, because on a direct-vent gas fireplace the glass is a sealed part of the combustion system, not just a window.
Why the exact pane matters
Fireplace glass isn't ordinary glass. Gas units use ceramic or tempered safety glass rated for high heat and, on a direct-vent, sized to seal the firebox — the unit draws combustion air and vents exhaust through a closed system, and the glass completes that seal. Wood-stove and insert doors use a glass-ceramic that takes direct thermal shock. Either way, it's replaced with the manufacturer's part for your specific model, cut and gasketed to spec. A generic pane is a safety problem, not a shortcut.
Stop using it until it's replaced
A cracked direct-vent pane breaks the seal, so the unit shouldn't run until it's fixed — you can lose proper venting. On a wood unit, a cracked door pane can fail entirely under heat and let embers or smoke into the room.
