My gas fireplace glass is hazy or white — can it be cleaned or does it need to be replaced?
Almost always cleaned, not replaced. That white or hazy film is a normal mineral and combustion residue that bakes onto the inside of the glass over time — it comes off with the right hearth-glass cleaner and proper technique. Permanent etching or a cracked pane is the rare exception that needs new glass, but cloudiness alone is a cleaning job.
What the haze actually is
The white film is a calcium and silica deposit — minerals off-gassed during combustion that settle on the cooler inner surface of the glass, plus a little normal residue during the break-in burns of a new unit. It builds up gradually and it's cosmetic. Ordinary household glass cleaner won't touch it and can streak or damage the coating; it takes a proper hearth-glass cleaner and a non-scratch pad, worked on cool glass. We do this as part of a tune-up, and the pane comes back clear.
When cleaning won't fix it
Two cases need new glass. First, true etching: if deposits sat for years and baked in hard, they can permanently cloud the surface — cleaning helps but won't fully restore it. Second, damage: a chip, crack, or a failed coating. Gas-fireplace glass is a tempered or ceramic safety pane rated for that specific unit, and on a direct-vent it's a sealed part of the combustion system — so it's replaced with the manufacturer's exact glass, never a hardware-store substitute.
The habit that prevents it
A little haze each season is normal; a lot, fast, can mean the unit is running rich or dirty — worth a look. Either way, keeping up with annual service keeps the glass clear and lets us catch a combustion issue before it stains everything.
