Do the embers, sand, and rock wool in a gas log set need to be replaced periodically?
Yes — the glowing embers (rock wool) and the sand or vermiculite under a vented gas log set are consumables that break down over years of heat and should be refreshed periodically, usually during annual service. They don't wear out on a set schedule, but when embers gray out, mat down, or the flame starts sooting, it's time.
What each material does — and why it fades
The embers are that bed of glowing orange under the flame; on a vented set they're rock wool — mineral fiber that lights up when the burner flame hits it. Over years the fibers compact, gray out, and stop glowing. It's cosmetic, not dangerous, but the fire loses its life. The sand or vermiculite is the base that spreads gas evenly across the burner pan; it can pack down or get soot-contaminated over time, which changes how and where the flame lands.
Why placement matters more than replacement
Here's the part homeowners get wrong: rock wool and ember material must sit only where the manufacturer specifies, and it never goes packed onto the burner ports of a ventless set. Wrong placement is a leading cause of a lazy, yellow, sooty flame — and on ventless units it can trip the oxygen-depletion sensor. When to refresh
There's no calendar rule. We look at it every year: if the embers have grayed and matted, if the sand is soot-stained, or if the flame has gone yellow and started depositing black on the logs or glass, we refresh the media with the correct Real Fyre or manufacturer material.
