What ages a log set

Vented logs live in the flame, and their whole job is to look real, so they age cosmetically before they age mechanically. Over 10 to 15 years the ceramic-fiber or refractory logs fade, the hand-painted char softens, and edges can chip or crack from the constant heat cycling. Because vented logs are ambiance-first — a tall, realistic yellow flame with most of the heat going up the chimney, damper open — a set that still lights cleanly but looks worn is a candidate for refreshing, not scrapping.

The parts underneath

The burner pan, the grate, the pilot, and the safety valve are separate from the logs and generally run longer. When those are solid and only the logs are tired, we can often re-lay a fresh set of logs on the existing burner, provided it's a compatible system. That's a fraction of the cost and effort of a full replacement.

If the burner is sooting, the flame has gone lazy and yellow-orange in a bad way, or the pilot won't behave, that's a service issue rather than worn logs — and worth diagnosing before you spend on anything.

When to just start fresh

Sometimes the smarter move is a new set or even a conversion.
