Should I clear snow and ice away from my fireplace's outside vent termination?

Yes — and in Asheville it depends on where your termination sits. Montford and North Asheville homes often run a direct-vent insert up an old masonry chimney chase, so watch the roof cap for ice dams; newer South Asheville builds usually vent low out a sidewall, right where snow drifts and slides. Keep whichever one you have clear.

Know which termination your home has

Two setups are common around Asheville, and they fail in snow for different reasons. A sealed insert retrofitted into a Montford, North Asheville, or Grove Park masonry chimney usually terminates at a cap up on the roof, where a shed snow slab or an ice dam chokes the intake and trips the fireplace off. A newer South Asheville build, or a West Asheville loft that added a fireplace where none existed, typically vents low out a sidewall, and those vanish under a plowed drift or roof runoff.

So the first move after any storm is to look. Walk the outside and put eyes on the actual cap or sidewall vent, and if it is crusted, wait until the fireplace is fully cold, then sweep the snow off by hand and open a good foot of clear space around it. Solid ice you leave alone: let it thaw, never pry.

Minutes from Emma Road when it won't clear

Our showroom is right here on Emma Road, so an Asheville vent that is glazed solid or a cap that looks bent is never a long wait for us. Elevation matters too. It keeps nights in the 20s well into early spring, so a vent iced over on the shaded side of the house can stay that way past noon rather than thawing by mid-morning.

If yours will not clear, keeps re-icing, or the pipe looks damaged, do not run the fireplace. Call (828) 545-0525 and we will come look. Replacing gas venting is licensed work in North Carolina, and we pull the Buncombe County permit whenever the run needs redoing.
