A newer South Asheville build, or a West Asheville loft that added a fireplace where none existed, typically vents low out a sidewall, and those vanish under a plowed drift or roof runoff.
So the first move after any storm is to look. Walk the outside and put eyes on the actual cap or sidewall vent, and if it is crusted, wait until the fireplace is fully cold, then sweep the snow off by hand and open a good foot of clear space around it. Solid ice you leave alone: let it thaw, never pry.
