Should I get a freestanding gas stove or a wood stove?
In Brevard, we'd start with two facts: you're in Transylvania County, and you're in propane country out among the cabins. A freestanding gas stove on propane lights instantly and needs no chimney; a wood stove gives grid-independent primary heat but leans on a masonry chimney that Brevard's rainfall is genuinely tough on.
Permits and the Transylvania inspector
Whichever appliance you choose, connecting the fuel is licensed gas work in North Carolina — a mason or a furniture showroom can sell you a beautiful stove but legally can't run it to fuel. We can, and we pull the Transylvania County permit and meet the inspector on every job. That permit protects your homeowner's insurance and your home's sale value; unpermitted gas or hearth work can void both.
What 80 inches of rain does to a wood stove's chimney
Brevard sees 80-plus inches of rain a year, and it's brutal on masonry — cracked crowns, spalled brick, and rusted dampers, especially through the wet March-to-June stretch. A wood stove is only as reliable as the chimney above it, so we inspect, waterproof, and often reline before we set one. A direct-vent gas stove skips the vulnerable chimney entirely, venting straight out a sidewall — a real advantage in this climate. The crawl spaces and chimney chases here take on moisture too, worth a look during install.
Propane and the cabin look
Out toward Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, and the mountain cabins, propane is the fuel. A propane gas stove gives you instant, adjustable heat, and for a timber-frame great room a hand-built Mendota is the luxury centerpiece. We're 40 minutes southwest, and we coordinate the tank set with your propane supplier while we handle the piping and appliance. Free in-home assessment: (828) 545-0525.
