Should pregnant women avoid ventless gas fireplaces?
It's a reasonable precaution for a pregnant woman to avoid a ventless (vent-free) gas fireplace, and it's what we'd steer toward. Because a ventless unit burns with the damper closed and returns its combustion byproducts and moisture to the room, a sealed direct-vent fireplace is the lower-worry choice during pregnancy. What makes ventless different
A vent-free gas fireplace has no flue — it burns with the damper closed so nearly all its heat stays in the room, which is efficient by design. But it also means the water vapor and trace combustion gases, including a little nitrogen dioxide, stay in the room with you. Each unit has an oxygen-depletion sensor and strict room-size limits, and ventless is already restricted or prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms in many jurisdictions. For most healthy adults, used within the rules, it is a legitimate heater.
Why we'd steer a pregnant woman elsewhere
Pregnancy is exactly the situation where we would rather remove a variable than manage it.
