Should the fireplace surround match my countertops or flooring?
Not necessarily — and matching too tightly usually backfires. The surround should coordinate with your countertops and flooring, sharing an undertone or a material family, but it looks best when it's either a clear match or a deliberate contrast, never an almost-match. Pulling the same stone from the kitchen into the fireplace can unify an open floor plan; a contrasting surround lets the fireplace stand on its own.
Coordinate, don't clone
The trap is the almost-match — a surround that's close to your countertop but a shade off, which reads as a mistake rather than a choice. Go one of two ways. Either truly match, pulling the exact same slab or a member of the same stone family into the fireplace so the eye connects them, or clearly contrast, choosing a different material and tone so each element stands on its own terms. What you want to avoid is two grays or two beiges that don't quite agree sitting in the same sightline.
When matching helps — open-concept homes
In today's open floor plans, where the kitchen, dining, and living areas share one big space, repeating a material is a powerful unifier. Carrying your quartz countertop or a similar quartzite up as the fireplace surround, or echoing the flooring's stone in the hearth, stitches the zones together and makes the whole level feel designed by one hand. The key is undertone: keep warm with warm, cool with cool, so the surfaces feel related even when they're not identical.
When contrast is the better move
If you want the fireplace to be the focal point, contrast is your friend. A dark honed-stone or blackened surround against light floors, or a rugged stacked-stone field in a room with sleek countertops, gives the hearth its own identity and keeps it from disappearing into the finishes. Texture counts as contrast too — matte stone against glossy counters reads intentional.
