What color should I paint the wall around my fireplace?

The biggest decision is whether you want the fireplace to stand out or settle in. A darker accent wall behind it — a deep charcoal, forest or olive green, navy, or a warm clay — frames the hearth and pulls every eye to it, especially with a lighter mantel or surround in front. If instead you want the room to feel serene and expansive, carry the same wall color across the fireplace wall so nothing jumps out and the fire itself becomes the accent. Both are right; they just do different jobs.

Let the surround lead

Your surround material sets the palette. Busy multicolor stone wants a quiet wall so the two don't fight — a soft white or greige. A plain painted-brick or smooth-plaster surround can carry a bolder wall color because the surround is calm enough to take it. If you've whitewashed or limewashed a brick fireplace, a warm white or a muted earthy tone keeps that soft, organic feel.

And think about the whole room: the fireplace wall should relate to your trim, adjacent walls, and flooring, not exist on its own island.
