What can I do if my neighbor's wood smoke keeps getting into my house?

Wet wood is the usual suspect
In a place that catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, the single biggest reason a neighbor's fire smokes is fuel that never dried out. Unseasoned or rain-soaked wood burns cool and smoky, throwing far more fine particulate than properly seasoned wood — and the wet season here runs hard from March into June. Out at the cabins on propane, wood smoke usually means a specific wood stove nearby; closer to downtown it may be an older fireplace. Pinning the source down starts with noticing when it's worst: damp, still evenings after rain.
Moisture wrecks the draft, too
All that water works on masonry. Cracked crowns, spalled brick, and rusted dampers are common on Transylvania County chimneys, and a chimney that can't draft cleanly spills smoke instead of clearing it — the neighbor's, or your own idle one backpuffing on a wet night. Cap an unused flue with a top-sealing damper to keep both weather and drifting smoke out. Inside, weatherstrip the leaks and run true-HEPA purifiers in the rooms you actually occupy; that's what catches the fine smoke that still finds its way in.
Talk fuel and appliance
A friendly conversation with a smoky neighbor often solves it two ways: dry, seasoned wood alone cuts the smoke a lot, and an EPA-certified insert or stove cuts it dramatically more.
