In a house with an original oversized firebox, your own unused flue is a wide, cold column that readily downdrafts when the home depressurizes — pulling outside air, and a neighbor's smoke, down into the living room. A top-sealing damper seals that off at the top while preserving the fireplace's look. Inside, weatherstrip the leaks and run a true-HEPA purifier where you sleep and sit; those catch the fine particulate that a standard filter lets pass. Keep the character, lose the smoke
The elegant fix for these homes — for you or a neighbor — is a sealed EPA-certified insert set into the existing firebox: it keeps the historic mantel and surround while burning a fraction of the smoke and finally throwing heat into the room.
