What does a fireplace's listed size like '42-inch' actually measure — viewing area or frame?
Usually neither exactly — that '42-inch' is a nominal model width the manufacturer uses to name the unit, roughly the firebox opening width. It's not the glass viewing width, which is smaller, and not the framed rough opening, which is larger. Always check the spec sheet's separate viewing-area and rough-opening numbers before you plan a wall.
A name, not a tape measurement
The number in a model name — 36, 42, 50 — is a nominal size the maker assigns, close to the firebox front width. Think of it like a 'queen' mattress: a category, not a precise dimension you build to.
Two brands' 42-inch units can have different actual glass sizes and different framing needs. So the headline number tells you the class of fireplace, not the tape-measure reality.
The three numbers that actually matter
Every spec sheet breaks the size into distinct figures. Viewing area is the glass you'll see the flame through — always smaller than the nominal width, because the frame and firebox walls eat into it. Overall or unit dimensions are the physical box.
