What is the rough opening or framing size for a built-in direct vent fireplace?
The rough opening is the framed hole your carpenter builds for the fireplace — always larger than the unit's nominal width and its actual box, because it includes clearances to wood framing. Each model publishes its own exact rough-opening width, height, and depth on the spec sheet; a 36-inch fireplace might need a framed opening several inches wider, and taller and deeper still.
What 'rough opening' means
A direct-vent built-in mounts inside a framed cavity — studs and headers your builder frames to a spec. The rough opening is that cavity's inside dimensions: width, height, and depth.
It's deliberately bigger than the fireplace cabinet so the unit drops in with its required air gaps and clearances to combustibles intact. Those clearances are what keep the framing cool and the install to code, so they aren't optional.
Every model is different
There is no one rough-opening size. It's specific to the make and model — width, height, and depth all published by the manufacturer. Linear units, tall traditional boxes, and see-through units each frame differently.
