Flat Rock has some of the oldest housing we work on — homes dating to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners. A craftsman-era mantel and tile surround are worth preserving, but that big open firebox pulls cold drafts into the room. The right move is a sealed insert behind the original detail: character kept, draftiness gone.
Old open hearths, cold-air drafts
Historic Flat Rock's oversized open fireplaces were built for a different era; today they pull more warm air up the flue than they give back, and on a cold night the opening acts like a hole in the wall. The aging clay liners are often past their prime, too. Dropping a sealed insert into that masonry opening solves both problems at once — it stops the draft, adds real heat, and needs a correctly sized liner, which we install. The oversized surround, the mantel, the period tile: all of it stays.
Keeping the character, updating the fire
The craftsman and Arts-and-Crafts vocabulary here — quarter-sawn oak, handmade tile, clinker brick, built-ins — is exactly what makes these Flat Rock homes special, so we work behind it, not over it. On natural gas, a sealed direct-vent unit or a gas insert with a realistic split-oak log set holds the traditional flame; if you want true fire, an EPA-certified wood insert keeps it era-correct. Either way we honor the clearances on that old combustible mantel so the update is safe as well as handsome.
