What furnace filter rating do I need to capture wood smoke particles?
For wood smoke you want at least a MERV 13 furnace filter — wood smoke is mostly fine PM2.5 particles, and MERV 13 is where a filter starts capturing them meaningfully. Confirm your blower can handle the added resistance first, though; many older systems can't. The rating that actually matters
Wood smoke isn't like dust or pet hair — it's dominated by PM2.5, particles smaller than 2.5 microns that slip through cheap filters. Here's the honest caveat: a higher MERV filter is denser, and density means resistance. Push a MERV 13 into a blower that was never spec'd for it and you can choke airflow — the system works harder, heats unevenly, and in a heat pump you risk coil problems. Some equipment handles it fine; some needs a deeper media cabinet to get the surface area without the pressure drop. Where the room beats the filter
Even a good furnace filter has two limits: it only cleans air that happens to pass through the return, and it only works when the blower is running. But the biggest win isn't filtration at all; it's not making the smoke indoors in the first place.
