What is a chimney balloon or flue plug, and how does it seal off an unused fireplace?
A chimney balloon (or flue plug) is an inflatable or foam block you insert up into the flue of a fireplace you're not using — it wedges into the chimney and seals off the draft, stopping warm air from escaping up and cold air, odors, and critters from coming down. It's a removable stopgap for an idle fireplace, not a permanent fix or a substitute for a working damper.
What a chimney balloon is
A chimney balloon — also sold as a flue plug or fireplace pillow — is an inflatable bladder or a dense foam block you push up into the throat of a fireplace you're not using and inflate or wedge until it seals the flue. Some are heavy-duty plastic you inflate by mouth or pump; others are foam. Either way, it blocks the chimney so it stops behaving like an open window: warm household air can't pour up and out, and cold drafts, rain smell, soot odor, and the occasional bird or squirrel can't come down. In a drafty older Asheville home with a fireplace nobody lights, it can noticeably cut the chill and the musty chimney smell.
The safety rule you cannot break
Here's the part that matters most: a chimney balloon is only for a fireplace that will not be lit, and it must never be anywhere near a gas appliance or gas logs. If you forget it's up there and light a fire, you fill the room with smoke — or worse, trap the exhaust from a gas set in your living room. Reputable balloons come with a warning tag that hangs down into the firebox for exactly this reason. If your fireplace has any gas component at all, this is not the product for you, full stop.
Better than a balloon, long term
A balloon is a stopgap. If a fireplace is drafting cold air all winter, the real fixes are more durable: repairing or replacing a failed damper, or fitting a top-sealing damper that closes off the flue at the top with a gasketed seal you operate from below. And if you've simply stopped using that fireplace, the best answer is often to make it earn its keep — a gas insert or a gas log set turns a cold, sealed-off hole into usable heat and ambiance, with a licensed gas line and a permit.
