What 'clean-face' actually means

Older gas fireplaces wore a black metal face and a row of louvers top and bottom to move air for cooling and combustion. A clean-face — or frameless — fireplace does away with all of that visible hardware. Direct-vent models pull combustion air and exhaust it through a single sealed coaxial pipe, so they don't need front louvers at all, and the cooling is handled behind the scenes.

Why designers love the look

The appeal is simple: with no trim in the way, your finish material runs right to the edge of the glass, so the fireplace reads like a window of fire set into the wall. The clearance caveat

Seamless doesn't mean you can put anything anywhere. The glass and the wall directly around it get hot, so combustible finishes — wood, some paneling, drywall — have to respect the manufacturer's clearance-to-combustibles, while non-combustible materials can go right up to the opening.
