Non-combustible runs to the glass

Non-combustible materials are the ones that can go right up to the edge of a clean-face gas fireplace: porcelain and ceramic tile, including large-format porcelain slabs; natural stone like marble, limestone, granite, and slate; stacked stone veneer; cast concrete; metal such as blackened steel or copper; and plaster finishes like limewash or Roman clay applied over cement board.

Combustibles have to keep their distance

Combustible finishes are a different story. Wood mantels, shiplap, MDF paneling, and ordinary drywall have to stop back from the opening at the manufacturer's listed clearance-to-combustibles, which varies model to model. That's the reason a wood mantel above a fireplace has a minimum height and projection spec — it's not arbitrary, it's the number that keeps the wood cool enough.

Decide the finish before the drywall

Your finish plan isn't just cosmetic — it drives the framing depth and the type of backer board behind the surround, so it needs to be settled early, ideally at rough-in.
