What is a cold-climate pilot setting on an IPI fireplace?

It's an alternate pilot mode on some electronic-ignition (IPI) fireplaces that keeps a small pilot flame burning continuously in cold weather, instead of relighting from cold every time. Warming the firebox and venting this way prevents condensation, sluggish ignition, and nuisance lockouts when it's very cold outside — the kind of deep cold WNC's higher elevations see all winter.

A winter mode for electronic ignition

A cold-climate pilot setting — some brands call it continuous pilot or CPI mode — is an option on certain IPI fireplaces that keeps a small pilot flame lit continuously during cold weather instead of relighting from stone cold each time. You're temporarily turning your on-demand electronic unit into something closer to a standing-pilot unit, on purpose, for the coldest stretch of the year.

Why deep cold trips up IPI

Cold works against a from-cold ignition in a few ways. A frigid flue fills with dense, heavy air that sits like a plug and resists drafting, so a freshly sparked pilot struggles to establish. Very cold combustion air and a cold firebox can also cause condensation and sluggish, stop-start lighting or nuisance lockouts where the unit won't stay lit. Up on WNC's higher ridges and out at the colder elevations, where single-digit mornings are routine, that's a real-world headache — thinner mountain air makes draft touchier to begin with.

When to use it — and letting us set it

The cold-climate setting keeps the pilot and flue warm so ignition is instant and reliable when it's bitter out. The tradeoff is the same as any standing pilot: it burns a little gas continuously, so you switch it on for deep winter and back off in the milder shoulder seasons. Not every IPI unit has it, and where it exists it's configured in the controls rather than by a wall switch. We set it correctly at installation or annual service and show you when to toggle it.
