What is fireplace refacing and what does it involve?

In Sylva, refacing means a new outer surface on the fireplace — stone, tile, or a rebuilt surround — over the same firebox and flue. Between hard-used student rentals near WCU and historic Dillsboro homes with older masonry chimneys, the reface here has to account for both heavy wear and the Tuckasegee valley's damp air working against the base underneath.

Two kinds of Sylva fireplace

The rental housing around Cullowhee and WCU tends to be used hard and maintained unevenly, so a reface is often paired with catching up on deferred service — making sure the firebox behind the new surface is actually safe before we dress it. Historic Dillsboro is the other end: 19th-century masonry with older flue liners, where the goal is a fresh finish that respects the period. Both are workable substrates, but each starts with an honest look at what's really behind the brick.

River-valley damp is hard on the base

Sylva sits in the Tuckasegee valley, where cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster than in drier towns. Refacing is skin-deep by design, so if the masonry behind it has taken on moisture or the mortar's gone soft, we address that before covering it — veneer set over damp or crumbling brick lifts within a season or two. Sound base first, then the finish cut clean around the opening. Hiding a moisture problem behind new stone just buys it time to spread.

Jackson County, and the licensed line

Around the opening the clearance to combustibles governs the layout — non-combustible material inside the zone, wood trim outside it. Any reface that touches a liner, insert, or gas line is licensed work we permit with Jackson County and pressure-test. Sylva's about fifty minutes west of our Asheville showroom, so we fold the assessment and the plan into a single visit. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free reface assessment.
