What is the difference between a thermocouple and a thermopile, and do they both wear out?
Both are pilot-flame sensors that turn heat into electricity, but a thermocouple powers just the pilot safety valve (one probe, around 30 millivolts), while a thermopile is a stack of thermocouples generating enough current (500-plus millivolts) to run the main burner valve, remote, and wall switch. Yes — both wear out, usually in that 5-to-10-year range.
Thermocouple = safety; thermopile = power
They look similar sitting in the pilot flame, but they do different jobs. The thermocouple proves the pilot is lit and holds the pilot safety valve open — small output, one job. The thermopile (sometimes called a generator) is a bundle of thermocouples wired together, so it produces far more millivoltage — enough to actually open the main gas valve when you flip the wall switch or hit the remote. Many millivolt fireplaces carry both: one to prove the pilot, one to power the show. On a true millivolt unit, that's also why it works with no house electricity at all.
How the symptoms differ
Because they do different jobs, they fail differently — which is handy for diagnosis. A weak thermocouple means the pilot won't stay lit: you light it, let go, it dies. A weak thermopile is the opposite: the pilot lights and stays lit just fine, but the main burner won't come on from the switch or remote, or only fires once everything's been warmed up for a while. Two different complaints, two different parts, and knowing which is which saves time and money.
Both are wear items
