Can a thermocouple be cleaned instead of replaced?
Sometimes — if the pilot keeps dropping out because the thermocouple tip is sooted or sitting wrong in the flame, a gentle cleaning and repositioning can bring it back. But once the sensor itself has fatigued from years of heat, cleaning won't help and it's cheaper to just replace it. A technician can tell which you've got in a couple of minutes.
When cleaning does the trick
A perfectly good thermocouple can still fail to hold the pilot if its tip is coated in soot or has drifted out of the flame's path. Either way it under-reads a flame that's actually burning fine, and the safety trips and shuts the gas. In that case a technician buffs the tip clean and repositions it so it sits properly bathed in the pilot flame — no new part needed. On units that soot up, often because of the spider-and-dust clog we see every fall, a cleaning genuinely is the fix.
When it won't help
The other half of the time, the junction has simply degraded from the inside after years of thermal cycling — the normal end of a 5-to-10-year life. When that's the case, the output stays low no matter how spotless the tip is, and cleaning just delays the inevitable. Since the part itself is inexpensive, most technicians will just replace a worn thermocouple rather than nurse an old one back for a few more weeks. It's the honest call, not the upsell — a fresh, inexpensive sensor beats a repeat visit down the road.
