Sizing beats the spec sheet

Chasing a percentage point of rated efficiency while ignoring sizing is backwards. An oversized insert spends its life throttled down or cycling, overheating the room and wasting the capacity you paid for; a right-sized one runs steadily in its sweet spot. The rule of thumb is around 20 Btu per square foot in a moderate climate — WNC pushes that up — but ceiling height, insulation, and how open the room is all move the number. Why the insert format is efficient in the first place

An open masonry fireplace can actually run a net heat loss — it pulls your furnace-warmed air up the chimney faster than the fire replaces it. A sealed direct-vent insert reverses that: combustion air comes from outside through the liner system, the firebox is sealed glass, and the heat exchanger and blower push warmth into the room instead of up the flue.
