What is the most efficient type of fireplace?

But for a real heater most homes can live with, a sealed direct-vent gas fireplace or an EPA-certified insert running 70%-plus is the practical winner. An open masonry fireplace sits at the bottom — it can actually lose heat.

Electric sits at essentially 100% — every watt becomes heat — but tops out around 5,000 BTU, which makes it a space heater with a beautiful flame. Vent-free gas hits 99.9% because there's no flue for heat to escape. Sealed direct-vent gas fireplaces and EPA-certified inserts commonly run 70% efficient or better. Vented gas logs send most of their heat up the chimney — they're ambiance, not a heater. Why the biggest number isn't the best answer
Vent-free's 99.9% comes with strings: it adds moisture to the room, it's limited by room size, and it's restricted or prohibited in some applications and jurisdictions — bedrooms and bathrooms in particular. Electric's 100% can't scale past space-heater territory, and it goes dark the moment the power does — which, after Helene, is not a footnote in these mountains.
