What is the surround or flashing panel on an insert and how is it sized?
The surround is the flat metal panel — usually black — that frames an insert and covers the gap between the insert's body and your fireplace opening. It's sized to your opening: you pick a standard or oversized surround so the panel overlaps your masonry on all sides, hiding the gap and sealing the face. Bigger openings need a larger surround.
What it does
Because an insert has to be smaller than your opening to slide in, there's always a gap around it. The surround — also called the faceplate or flashing — closes that gap. Think of it as a picture frame that overlaps your firebox opening and gives the installation a finished, built-in look.
It also seals the face so room air isn't drawn into the cavity around the insert. Nearly every gas and wood insert we install uses one.
How it gets sized to your fireplace
Manufacturers offer surrounds in set sizes — commonly a standard panel and one or two larger options — each stated as an overall width and height. We measure your opening, then choose the surround that overlaps enough on top and both sides to fully cover the gap.
If an opening is unusually tall or wide, the oversized surround handles it; if it's larger still, we build a filler or trim it out for a clean fit. This is exactly why we measure your opening precisely before quoting — the insert and the surround are chosen together.

Most surrounds come in a standard black, with some brands offering different finishes or trim kits to match a room.
