What measurements does a fireplace dealer need before quoting an insert or log set?
Before we quote an insert or log set we need front width, rear width, depth, and height of the firebox — each measured to its tightest point — plus the hearth extension depth and whether the fireplace is masonry or prefab. For gas, we also need your fuel type, natural gas or propane. Clear photos of the firebox and damper help a lot.
The measurement packet
Start with the six core numbers: front width, rear width, height to the top of the opening and to the damper, depth at the floor and higher up, and the hearth extension. Measure each to its narrowest point — a rigid insert or log frame only seats if it clears the tightest pinch in every direction. Note the damper type while you're in there. Those numbers alone let us rule most appliances in or out before anyone drives out to your place.
The context that turns numbers into a quote
Beyond the tape, we need whether it's masonry or prefab — and if prefab, the model number off the metal label. We need your fuel: natural gas along the Asheville and Hendersonville mains, or propane out in Fairview, Candler, Brevard, and the cabins. We need a read on the chimney and flue for liner sizing, and we need to know what you're after — pure ambiance or real, room-warming heat. An insert needs a liner and a gas line; a log set needs the right fuel orifice. Photos of the opening, damper, and outside chimney fill in the gaps.
